Health glossary
Acerola
Also called the Barbados cherry. Thanks to its high Vitamin C content, its juice is often used to add vitamins to fruit juices.
Açai
The açai berry is a small, lilac-coloured fruit which grows in the Amazon rainforest, particularly in Brazil. Thanks to its high vitamin and anti-oxidant content, this fruit has revitalised de local economy and become locally a new source of income.
Anti-oxidants
Substances, which protect molecules against oxidisation by emitting electrons or absorbing hydrogen atoms, without themselves being converted into reactive molecules. They scavenge free radicals in the body and thus prevent cell damage. An actual preventive function is attributed to anti-oxidants in respect of particular diseases.
Anti-oxidative
Protects body cells against oxidation and free radicals (see anti-oxidants).
Antiviral
Protects against viruses, potentially prophylactic against viral infections.
Iron
Provides cellular energy and favours the oxygen enrichment of red blood cells.
Folic acid
Essential for cell production and the metabolism.
Free radicals
They appear as a result of physiological stress or of harmful external factors. It has been widely suggested that the resulting oxidation damage is one of the causes of ageing.
Potassium
Necessary to the cells' efficient use of energy.
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates and saccharides - to which the various sugars belong - is an important family of organic compounds. Carbohydrates, in addition to fats and proteins, are one of the key building blocks of human nutrition and the body's most important source of energy.
Copper
Produces energy for the blood, immune and nervous system.
Magnesium
Strengthens heart, muscles and nerves.
Manganese
Metabolises complex Vitamins B.
Sodium
Balances the body's water and acid levels.
Niacin
Activates the metabolism and favours cell aeration.
Phosphorus
Strengthens bone structure and provides energy.
Polyphenols
Protect cells and act as powerful anti-oxidants. Natural polyphenols are present in plants in the form of bioactive substances, such as colourings (flavonoids, anthocyanins), flavours and tannins.
Free radical scavenger
Substances which capture radicals and render them harmless.
Vitamins B1/2/3/6
Perfect vitamins for the nervous system.
Vitamin C
Strengthens the immune system and neutralises free radicals. Vitamin C / ascorbic acid is a colour and odourless, crystalline and easily water soluble solid with a sour taste.
Xanthohumol
Natural component of hop plants - an anti-oxidant with a highly promising anti-viral and anti-inflammatory potential. Xanthohumol thus contributes to the reduction of the risk of inflammation, protects against cardiac diseases and osteoporosis and delays the cells ageing process (anti-aging).
XAN Roast malt extract
A natural roast malt extract developed by Prof. Dr. Werner Back (TU Munich), Dr. Achim Zürcher and Sascha Wunderlich, in which Xanthohumol is enriched using a patented process and which allows for the easy use of this precious ingredient in beverages and foods.
Zinc
Strengthens the immune system and protects cells. Zinc is essential for all living things and the component of important enzymes.
